San Francisco thrash funk band formed in 1984.The Limbomaniacs had something of a revolving door ethic when it came to band members, with players constantly coming and going. By 1990, the rising success of Punk-Funksters Red Hot Chili Peppers ensured this San Francisco underground outfit would gain a modicum of notoriety. When hot-item-of-the-moment Bill Laswell agreed to produce their debut album Stinky Grooves, bringing along with him funk legends Bootsy Collins and Maceo Parker for cameo appearances, the spotlight got even hotter.

Mindfunk were a metal band containing members of Soundgarden and Celtic Frost. Their name was originally intended to be Mindf*ck but due commercial pressures they changed it to Mindfunk. Unfortunately this lumped them in with the burgeoning funk metal scene - everyone from RHCP, Infectious Grooves, Fishbone, Mordred etc. - but they had little in common with any of those bands.

London-based acid jazz quartet the Sandals only lasted for one album, but their ability to sign with a major label and score a pop hit with their single “Feet” was an early indication that trendy club music could comfortably move from the hipster fringes into the mainstream. Naturally, some despise them for this, but the group’s two releases, the full-length Rite to Silence and the EP Cracked, are superb early-’90s dance records.
